The Puerto Rico compensation program is the nation's newest, beginning operation in 1998. Residents of other U.S. states are eligible for benefts for crimes occurring in Puerto Rico.

FUNDING
The program receives $50 to $100 from each misdemeanor conviction, and $300 from each felony conviction. The program has received an annual VOCA grant since 2002.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Law enforcement reporting period: 72 hours, except for just cause
Filing period: 6 months

 

PROCEDURES
The program director and claims technicians investigate and document the application, and the director makes eligibility decisions.

Appeals: Applicant may seek reconsideration of the director's decision with the attorney general. The appellate court in Puerto Rico may review this decision

BENEFITS
Maximum award: $6,000 per person, $15,000 per family; additional $25,000 in catastrophic-injury cases

Compensable Costs (with limits)

  • Medical expenses: up to $6,000 per person, $15,000 per family; additional $25,000 in catastrophic injuries
  • Mental health counseling: $6,000 per person, $15,000 per family
  • Lost wages/support: $6,000 per person, $15,000 per family in lost income
  • Funerals: $3,000
  • Transportation: $1,000
  • Emergency: $500
